Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   New story

Posted 28/02/2025
by Ruth Smith

For our Nursery visit to St Anne's this week we took our new story to share with them.

Our story is 'Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?' - the children enjoyed sharing it with the Grannies and the Grannies were happy to help with our activity of colouring some pictures of the characters from the story.
We even found a song version on Youtube which we sang along to.

The children always enjoy their special treat of a biscuit and drink at St Anne's and love going to visit them.

As we delve into our new story we shall be looking at the different animals, the colour of their fur, feathers or skin; the habitats that the animals live in and where we would see these animals ourselves.
We will also be learning about our senses and exploring how we use them.

Welcome back to Pre school.

We have been very busy in our first week back to Pre school!

We welcomed Mrs Evans to Pre school on a Monday and Tuesday morning.

Our topic this half term is 'People who help us' and this week we have been learning all about fire fighters, and how they help us. We created beautiful fire pictures using tin  foil to create flames.  Next week we are going to learn about dentists and oral health. We are hoping to have a visit from a dental nurse.

This week we have also  started to learn our sounds! We follow the RWI nursery program. We follow the same phonics scheme as the school ready for September. This week we looked at 'm' Maisie mountain mountain. Everyone loved this. We also thought of a few words that begin with the sound 'm' - mummy, moon, mouse, monster, mermaid, milk. How clever are they?!

Speaking, of very clever children. This week the very clever super star children have started to learn to write their names. We looked at how we hold our pens and where we start to form each sound. Well done everyone. In a few weeks time I will be sending out a copy for you to have at home.

We have also been loving the beautiful sunshine and been outside in our outside area. If anyone has any plants we could plant we would be very grateful.

Come back next week to see what exciting things we get up to. World book day, St Piranis day and lots lots more!

Miss Whitty, Miss Ronald and Mrs Evans.

It has been a very busy week in Chaipel, this week.

We had poet and childrens book author Sally Crabtree in to teach us how to compose and write cinquains (a five-line stanza) along the theme of nature. We began by selecting words to create a short piece of poetry, popped them onto a biscuit and then literally ATE OUR WORDS! We had a lovely afternoon and Sally was great.

We have been learning about the demise of Anne Boleyn in English, taking notes about her life and learning some typical Tudor phrases. We will then use these to write a series of diary entries - through the eyes of the then Queen Anne - leading up to her execution on May 19th 1536.

In Maths, Y6s have been learning all they need to know about working with decimals whilst the Y5s have been finding a fraction of  an amount and multiplying and dividing fractions with integers.

We have launched our exciting enquiry into Tudor England, where we will be comparing the lives of the poor and rich as well as their places in society. We will be learning a range of sewing techniques in DT, building up to creating a Tudor coin purse as well as researching the history of computers in Computing, finishing by creating an audio advert for a computer of the future!

Congratulations to Dominic and to Freddie and Ava for gaining their BRONZE in 99 Club as well as Isaac and Elsie for being our People of the Week, demonstrating our school values and being excellent role models.

I sent a letter home to ask if the children could bring in an item of clothing from home - on Monday, please - so that we can investigate the material, stitching and how various parts are sewn together.

Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

Miss Randle, Mrs Clary, Mrs Hodge and Miss Colton.

At last the sun starts shining!

Welcome back to the Spring 2 Term.  See attached the knowledge webs for Year 1 and 2 - you can look over what we will be learning this term.  Our 'Big Question' in Geography this term is 'What is the weather like in the UK?'

This week we have started learning how to write weather forecasts in our English lessons.  Math's, the Year 2's have started to learn about multiplication (we've already been learning our 2 times tables).

For our geography knowledge harvest, we came up with questions we want to answer about the weather.

Art on Friday we investigated making secondary colours out of primary colours - we had great fun!

Wonderful Weather

What a wonderful start to the second half of the spring term. We have all absolutely loved the sunshine towards the end of the week! Our EYFS children have really made the most of the spring like weather and have been enjoying lots of time outside. We have been tidying up our garden after a very wet spell and getting stuck in to some large construction play. There have been some incredible designs from police stations to a fully functioning plumbing system! As usual we have made plenty of time for stories and we have all loved getting absorbed in our new 'Oi Frog' series. The rhyming stories have had us laughing together as well as helping us to learn lots of new vocabulary. Every single Tregantle child was a writer this week when they used their knowledge of the 'Oi Frog' stories to label different animals and objects from the story.
Our Amazing Year 1 children have been learning all about primary and secondary colours in their art lesson this week. They used primary coloured play dough to mix and create new shades and colours. We have seen some amazing weather reports from our year 1 writers as they embarked on their new topic 'What is the Weather like in the UK.' It's been a really good week to explore lots of different types of weather! We are really looking forward to recording our weather reports next week!

February was a short month with half term but we still managed to have fun learning new things.

After half term we introduced our new question - 'Where Do We Live?'. We wrote some questions about what we would like to find out including 'Where does the Tamar river start and finish?'.
Then we learnt about the difference between physical and human features to help us when exploring our local area.
In DT we completed our aeroplanes, have a look at the photos, they are fabulous!
In music we are learning to play the glockenspiel. We have learnt how to play B and A and we are hoping to be able to play 'Hot Cross Buns' in time for Easter!
In art we have started a new unit on drawing and sketchbooks. This week we practised drawing different types of lines and patterns.
In literacy we have been writing poems based on the book 'I Love Bugs' by Emma Dodd. We wrote some amazing poems of our own called 'I Love Pets.'

Friday 28th February

The first week back to school is over already! What a quick week!

The children have amazed us at how well they come back to school enthused and ready to learn!

Our big question this half term is: Who Made These Footprints?

This week we have been exploring the life of Amelia Earhart. The children explored how she brought her own plane at the age of 22 and called it the Canary- it was yellow! The children loved learning that Amelia was the first lady to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

The children have been creating planes from pasta, colouring in the canary plane, learning how to make paper airplanes and flying them outside, learning how to draw a plane step by step and so much more.

In English this week we started to read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk; we all loved this story! We read a few different versions and even watched a musical version too! The children learnt the story through role play and a story map and then used their own story maps to sequence and retell the story using amazing oracy skills!

In maths this week we have been combining two groups. The children have worked so hard and progressed so well with their early addition stories. We also continue to sing our 2-, 5- and 10-times table songs daily.

The children’s reading has been fantastic this week in phonics. We have been learning digraphs /or/ and /ur/.

In outdoor learning this week we had outlines of footprints and we collected daisy's, grass and leaves to fill the footprints in, we then went on a footprint hunt around the edge of the school field!

Next week we look forward to pancake day, St Piran’s Crafternoon with the parents and World Book Day!

Have a wonderful weekend

Weekly Blog 28th February

Today brings the end of the first week back and the weather has - for the most part - been a huge improvement on last half term. We always aim to get out and about as much as possible and nicer weather helps s to do this. PE this half term will take place outside, and Mr Ward has asked that children bring in a pair of shoes that they can get a bit muddy as their will be PE sessions on the field. Children are able to come into school in their kits as usual. Class 2 had their final presentation session with the Eden project this week. The team at Eden are going to book another session in just for us! We are very proud of the work that they did over this project and their finished presentation was amazing! Other news: Next week is World Book Day. The librarians are holding a book swap where they can bring up to 5 pre-loved books and swap them for others to keep and read. We also have a few spaces for our piano lessons with Pam. If your child is interested in taking part in these, please let us know in the office. We now have a clothing bank in the car park. If you have any old clothes and shoes that you no-longer want, bring them into school in a bag and put them into the bin. We will then be able to recycle these. Have a wonderful weekend in the good weather!

It has been yet another busy week at Team Brunel with an array of learning opportunities for our children. The School Council led an incredible assembly at the beginning of the week as they proposed to changed the names of our school houses. After holding a democratic vote with the whole school community, Castles were the winners with our new houses named Pendennis (green), Tintagel (blue), Trematon (red) and Restormel (yellow)! Well done to our School Council for leading change within our school. To catch up with all the other events from the week, please dive into the Brunel Bulletin.

This week we have been exploring the farm and animals that live on the farm. We have been exploring our new enquiry question "What animals would you find on a farm?"
The children have been creating cow handprints, paper plate chicks and shredded paper sheep.
We have enjoyed singing "Old Macdonald had a farm" and creating lots of different animal sounds.
The children have been building with the farm, creating enclosures for the animals and have been making animal footprints in the tuft tray.

In phonics we have been naming and describing sounds that we have heard in our indoor and outdoor environment, copying sequences of body sounds and exploring instruments and the noises they make.

In maths we have been finding objects that represent numbers and matching them together. The children have been practicing number writing.

Have a lovely weekend
The nursery team.

w/e 28.2.25

We have had a fantastic first week back after the half-term break, and the children have settled brilliantly into their learning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:

English – Poetic Creations. This week, we have been exploring poetry, focusing on rhyme and rhythm. The children have planned and started writing their own poems, showcasing their creativity and developing their writing skills in exciting ways.

Maths – Building Skills and Understanding Year 4 have started learning about area and perimeter, tackling different challenges to deepen their understanding of these important concepts. Peri the snail has helped us remember how to calculate perimeters by counting around the edge of the shape.
Year 3 have been continuing their work on multiplication, building confidence and fluency in their number skills.

History – Discovering the Romans - We began our new topic on the Romans by looking at their impressive buildings and monuments. The children were fascinated by Roman architecture and are eager to learn more about this incredible civilization.

RE – Cornish Folktales - In RE, we have started to explore Cornish folktales, uncovering the rich traditions and storytelling heritage of our local area.

PE – Throwing and Catching - This week in PE, we focused on improving our throwing and catching skills. The children enjoyed various activities designed to develop their coordination and teamwork.

The Archie Project – Understanding Dementia - We had an engaging assembly about dementia as part of the Archie Project. The children learned about different types of dementia and how to interact with people who have it. These valuable skills will be put to use when we visit the residents of St Anne’s care home.

Science - Shadows! We had great fun creating dinosaur shadows on the playground. We learned how shadows are longer when the sun is lower in the sky. Next week, we will investigate this further.

It has been a great start to the half-term, and we are looking forward to all the exciting learning ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

In science we have continued to learn about different groups of vertebrates and their characteristics. We sorted animals by vertebrate group and by their diet. We have also written fact files about animals including lots of scientific language.
In maths we have been focusing on calculations using numbers within 20. In our Mastering Number sessions we have been exploring odd and even numbers.
We have concluded our geography learning about 'What will you fins where the land meets the sea' by reflecting on how human activity is changing what we can find at the water's edge. We read a story called 'Clean Up!' and saw videos and images of the effect plastic pollution is having on the sea and the animals that live in it.
In art we have created paintings in the style of the abstract artist Alma Thomas. It has been great fun to experiment with her style and to use a combination of brush painting and printing with paints to achieve the final pieces we are happy with. We are now moving onto the skill of collage. We have begun this with a class collage of the sunset over the sea. We chose cool colours for the sea and warm colours for the sun and sunset sky.
February also brought us Online Safety Day. This fit well with our term's computing learning which has been all about online safety. We have used the Digiduck stories from Childnet as a way to explore the themes of online safety.
We now have a new history big question 'How do we know about dinosaurs?'. We have already discovered that special scientists called paleontologists learn about prehistoric creatures like dinosaurs through studying fossils.

Making Banknotes

The children have had an interesting week adding their own pictures to a £10 note. This is part of the this half term's focus on 'Who should feature on a £10 banknote?' They have already researched features of banknotes and now recognise a couple of significant people who feature on them: Jane Austen and Winston Churchill, for example, The study now will investigate other significant figures within British history and, by the end of the half term, the children will be able to make an informed choice who they believe should feature on a British banknote and give reasons for their decision.

Maths
During this week, the children have consolidated their knowledge of multiplication and division. They have been given the opportunity to use their knowledge of short division and column method multiplication and applied this to solve simple word problems.

English
The children have learned to recite the William Wordsworth poem, I wandered lonely as a cloud. They then researched several features of the poem: personification, rhyming couplets and rhythm, for instance. They then started to write their own poem using a similar style to William Wordsworth.

Best wishes, Mrs Swabey, Mr Parry, Mrs Walters and Mrs Payne.

Welcome back for Spring 2

We hope you've all had a lovely half term break. It's wonderful to see the pupils so engaged with their learning on their return to school - and with the sun shining too!

CURRICULUM

Our topics for this half term can be found in the overview that I have attached below. In addition to this you will find this half term’s Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) to practice with your child. I have also included the Year 5 and Year 6 recommended reads and statutory spelling lists.

This week we've launched our Learning Adventure with orienteering in the school grounds to provide the pupils with an engaging learning opportunity to enable them to build on this knowledge during the term.

PE

PE continues to be on a Tuesday afternoon and pupils can wear their PE kits to school on these days.

SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME

In Upper Key Stage 2, it is important to support the children’s learning at home as much as possible. A reminder that our home learning expectations are:
Daily Reading (15 minutes) – recorded reading record to contribute to a Reading Karate reward
Times-tables and KIRF practice (20 minutes weekly) using TTRS and the KIRF sheets below
Spellings (20 minutes weekly)

YEAR SIX
In preparation for the SATs in May – we have given Year 6 children access to ‘Yearsix.co.uk’ which has a range of videos, practice tasks and assessments for each area of the Maths and Grammar curriculum. If you have lost your child’s login then please do get in touch and we can send it to you. Year 6 pupils and their parents or careers will have received additional information regarding supporting learning at home in the lead-up to assessments in May.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do get in touch.

Charity Bake & Bracelet Sale
Thank you to the group of Year 4 pupils and School Council for running this week’s bake sale, lucky dip and bracelet stall. In addition, thank you to everyone who kindly donated cakes. It was a terrific success raising £488.03 for our school charity - Newquay Zoo Wild Planet Trust. Well done everyone!

FOWPA Disco – Thursday 3rd April
Get your dancing shoes on; it's nearly time for our FOWPA Disco! As well as having a fun time, the event will also raise money for FOWPA (Friends of Wadebridge Primary Academy). All money raised goes towards supporting various school projects, resources and experiences. See the email sent home today for further details.

Coffee Morning and Phonics Workshop - Monday 3rd March 08:45-09:15

Have you got 30mins to spare? With World Book Day the same week, Mrs Hill will be holding a phonics workshop and coffee morning; everybody is invited! Come along and find out more about our approach to teaching early reading at WPA and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee at the same time.

Year 4 Residential Information Meeting - Tuesday 4th March 15:30 (Hall)
Mr Langton will be holding a meeting after school for parents in the Hall (and Year 4 children) for those who are going on the Year 4 residential to Porthpean in the summer term. Please can you supervise your child/ren during the meeting, thank you.

St Piran’s Day - Wednesday 5th March

To celebrate St Piran’s Day, your child is welcome to come to school in Cornish colours: black, white and gold (otherwise normal school uniform). Children will learn the story of St Piran and take part in a whole school ‘Trelawny Shout’ by singing one of our favourite songs, The Song of Western Men. Caterlink also have their special Cornish menu, including pasties!

World Book Day - Thursday 6th March
We would like to invite children to dress up as a book character to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6th March. Please don’t feel you need to go to any unnecessary expense; homemade costumes or keeping it simple is fine. Equally, dressing up isn’t for everyone so if your child prefers to attend in their own clothes that day, that is fine. Throughout the day, the children will take part in a range of book related activities including some paired reading with buddies in the opposite key stage over a hot chocolate and a biscuit. For this, we ask that each child brings in their favourite book to share. Our Reading Ambassadors will be visiting each classroom to interview children about their favourite books. Our classes have already started (and you may have spotted during this week’s PTCs) the whole school competition to ‘Decorate their Classroom Door’. Judging will take place on WBD – photos to follow!

Bridge Kids Staffing Update
We’re pleased to share that Charlotte Cloke, who recently joined the team as a Lunchtime Supervisor, successfully interviewed for the Breakfast Club Assistant position. Charlotte started this morning joining Bev Young as part of the Bridge Kids team. Later in March, Terina Buckingham will be stepping down from her Bridge Kids role after many years of dedicated service. It’s not goodbye though, as Terina will be continuing her Lunchtime Supervisor role. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Terina for all her contributions to Bridge Kids. Bev Young will be re-joining the After School Club team (in addition to her current roles in Breakfast Club and KS2 Teaching Assistant).

House Points
Congratulations to this week’s winners, Choughs. Choughs maintain a narrow lead overall:

Choughs – 5930
Swans – 5900
Puffins – 5213
Cormorants – 5077

St Cleer Primary Academy   Welcome back to Spring 2!

by Carmel Alberts

Welcome back to Spring 2! We hope you all had a wonderful and refreshing half term break. It's great to see everyone back, ready to dive into another exciting and engaging term of learning and discovery. Attached below, you will find an overview of the coverage for this term, which outlines all the fantastic activities and lessons we have planned.

This week, we kicked off our learning with the story of Zahra, a young girl who lives in an African village. The children have done a fantastic job sequencing the events of the story, and they came up with some thoughtful and imaginative questions they’d like to ask Zahra if they could meet her. It's been a wonderful start to our exploration of different cultures and communities around the world.

In Maths, we’ve continued our focus on subtraction, building on the skills we’ve already learned. The children are becoming more confident with subtracting numbers and solving word problems.

In ICT, the children have been working on creating their own flip books, learning the basic principles of animation. They have enjoyed experimenting with this fun and creative way of bringing pictures to life, and we are excited to see how they progress in understanding the magic of animation.

In PSHE, we filled in our treasure chest of success, reflecting on our individual achievements. It was wonderful to see how much the children have accomplished in different areas, from swimming to gymnastics and many other activities. It was a proud moment for everyone as we celebrated all their hard work and personal growth.

In RE, we delved into the story of Mount Hira, exploring its significance. The children then expressed their understanding and thoughts by drawing beautiful pictures using oil pastels. It was a great opportunity to combine learning with creativity.

Finally, the children thoroughly enjoyed their PE lesson this week. They participated with enthusiasm, developing their physical skills in a fun and engaging way.

Overall, it’s been a fantastic start to the term, and we’re looking forward to all the exciting things we’ll be learning and experiencing together in the coming weeks.
